The Tate Society papers contain files documenting their activities from their beginning in 1990, as well as materials related to Dean Tate himself. Of particular interest in the latter catagory is a transcript of one of Tate's renowned campus tours, seemingly corrected and annotated by Tate himself. For some years materials related to budget or special activities have been filed by the Society in the annual activies file, rather than being separated into their own folders.

University Archives obtained these materials from Dean Tate's son, Jeff Tate of Athens Georgia. Much of the collection was removed for preservation from two scrapbooks assembled after Tate's death by his wife, the late Susan Frances Barrow Tate (1908-2003). Along with photographs documenting Tate and his family there are views of the University and University activities, materials related to University Chancellor David C. Barrow and Dean Tate's track shoes from his record setting days as a student.

Of particular note is William Tate's diploma for his Master's degree from the University of Georgia. Also in the collection are photographs of individuals, fraternities, and an unidentified hydroelectric power plant.

The collection consists of papers of the Tate family of Gordon and Pickens counties, Georgia from ca. 1849-1975. The papers consist primarily of correspondence, both business and personal. The business correspondence relates to the Tates' involvement in the Georgia Marble Company (Tate, Georgia) and the Kennesaw Marble Company (Marietta, Ga.). The personal correspondence is mainly between Edna Ferguson Tate and her children Sarah and William Tate. Sarah's letters are from Agnes Scott College (Decatur, Ga.) where she was a student and from Orlando (Fla.) where she took a teaching job. William's letters are first as a student and later as an instructor and Dean of Men at the University of Georgia and contain a substantial amount of material relating to activities at the University and events in Athens, Georgia. Other correspondents include Philip May Tate, Stephen C. Tate, Florence M. Tate, and Samuel Tate. The collection also contains photographs of the Tate family and the Georgia Marble Company; account books ca. 1882-1904 pertaining to Sam'l & S.L. Tate & Co. (a general store) and the Georgia Marble Company; and materials relating to the history of Pickens County (Ga.).

Other materials include cash books and records from the R. L. Moss estate and minutes and cash book for Georgia Flow and Foundry Co., Inc., 1910-1931, which E. J. and John Boundurant were part of during this period.

The collection consists of correspondence, printed material, manuscripts, financial records, account books, and scrapbooks. Correspondence between Tate family members relates to news of family and friends. Correspondents include Carter Tate, Edna Tate, Philip May Tate, Susan Tate, and William Tate. Earlier materials pertain to Athens businessman Asaph King Childs, including account books, cash books, bills and receipts, correspondence, and timebooks documenting Childs' involvement with or management of the Cliff House (Tallulah Falls, Ga.), Childs & Moss (Athens, Ga.), and Childs, Nickerson & Company (Athens, Ga.). The collection also contains Civil War correspondence between Shatt C. Mitchell of the 13th Georgia Infantry Regiment and his wife Chloe including letters describing the battle of Antietam (Md.). Additional materials include scrapbooks containing clippings relating to Corra Harris.
